Who Stood Here Before Me?

In Sepember of 2010 I travelled to Germany from Australia for, I think, the seventh time. Apart from the culture in general and the beer in particular I like to visit historic places, especially those associated with German history. I intend to post photos from that trip with commentary. The thing I like about Europe in general and Germany in particular is that you can walk down the street and come across something interesting. For example, on my very first day in a little town on the Rhine, Konigswinter, I went for a walk and not 200 metres from my hotel I came across this:
On this spot, in 1793, some Austrian soldiers were in a hospital where they succumbed to their wounds and/or typhoid fever. 1793! The same year that George Washington was holding his first cabinet meeting. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are executed and back in Australia the first attempt to cross the blue Mountains has failed. Also, the same year the first boatload of free settlers (nowadays: boatpeople) arrives.
